Sacred Art III edition

The First Level Master’s Degree/Advanced Course in Sacred Art aims to provide theoretical and practical training in the field of sacred and religious art.

This sector, deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of our country, makes up a significant percentage of Italy’s artistic heritage.

At the end of the training each participant will be able to design and create fully contemporary works of art in continuity with the Christian tradition. The acquisition of artistic and artisanal techniques (painting, sculpture, goldsmithing), to which an important space is devoted, is enlightened and made its own in the dialogue with the theoretical subjects that also contribute in the original and interdisciplinary scientific framework of the course. The theoretical training will enable the student to read sacred art of the past and present in terms not only of aesthetics, but also of symbolism and function of use.

The First Level Master’s Degree is blended and includes an online and an in-person part consisting of 3 specializations:

  • Painting,
  • Sculpture,
  • Goldsmithing

The Advanced Course, on the other hand, involves only participation in the online theoretical part.

The Master’s Degree/Advanced Course is aimed at graduates with bachelor’s degrees particularly in art, architecture and theology, graduates in literature with an art-historical focus, and finally graduates of the Academies of Fine Arts and DAMS.

It is open to teachers of art, literature, and religion from institutions of higher education and to all those who wish to study Sacred Art in depth both from a practical point of view, to retrain their artistic production, and from a theoretical point of view, to better understand its deeper meaning.

The minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification. The minimum number required for the activation of the Master’s program is 11 students enrolled.

The minimum number required for the activation of the Advanced Course is 20 students enrolled.

The Level I Master’s degree, delivered in Italian and English, is taught in a blended mode:

  • an online theoretical part (IUL training environment): 9 modules for a total of 28 ECTS;
  • an in-presence laboratory part: 1 laboratory of your choice, among the 3 proposed, for a total of 20 ECTS: this is a workshop on one of the three planned specialization paths (painting, sculpture and goldsmithing);
  • an in-person final exam for a total of 12 ECTS.

The Advanced Course delivered in Italian and English is online and includes:

  • an online theoretical part (IUL training environment): 9 modules for a total of 28 ECTS.
  • an in-person final exam for a total of 2 ECTS.

The in-person classes of the workshops will be held at Scuola di Arte Sacra in Viale della Catena, 4 Le Pavoniere – Parco delle Cascine – 50144 Florence (FI), from April 11, 2023 until June 30, 2023. The student will be able to choose whether to remain at the School for the realization of the project to be presented at the final exam (November 2023) or to carry it out remotely under the guidance of the supervisor of the chosen art discipline.

An e-Learning environment characterized by the IUL training model is provided for the online modules; it is flexible and can be tailored to the students’ prior knowledge and experience and provides for each module moments of didactic delivery (didactic actions assimilated to frontal teaching) and moments of interactive teaching (forums, e-activities, etc.).

The articulation of online didactics for each ECTS is as follows:

  • 2h of didactic delivery (DD): audio or video recordings, web-conference lectures (online meetings, also referred to as “synchronous”), pre-structured courseware or assimilated variants (this is any material structured for teaching purposes and offered in web environments of various types);
  • 4h of interactive didactics (ID): didactic interventions by the lecturer or tutor addressed to the class or a part of it in the form of demonstrations or additional explanations (FAQs, mailing lists, forums), short interventions made by the trainees in forums, blogs and wikis, e-activities (individual or collaborative) carried out by the trainees with related feed-back;
  • 19 h self-study: individual and independent study.

The model adopted also envisages assisted learning throughout the training, not only by the teachers but also by the Master’s coordinator for the theoretical part and by the master of the chosen discipline for the practical and laboratory part.

At the end of the training course there is the production of a work of art, agreed with one of the Master’s teachers, in one of the three chosen specializations and its presentation and description from the point of view of materials, techniques and content.

A prerequisite for admission to the final exam is to have completed for each module all the in-progress tests/exams that may have been scheduled.

The final examination will be held at the Florence branch of the University, located at Via M. Buonarroti 10, 50122 Florence or at the School of Sacred Art in Viale della Catena, 4, Le Pavoniere – Parco delle Cascine – 50144 Florence.

The evaluations of the in-progress tests provided for each module will also contribute to the grade for the discussion of the final thesis.

The Level I Master’s degree is blended and lasts for one academic year for a total of 1.500 hours and provides 60 ECTS (university credits).
