Sacred Arts
The Professional master course in sacred arts is born out of the collaboration between IUL online university and the Sacred art school of Florence. The course aims at training experts in the sacred art sector providing competences to conceive and realise contemporary artworks, in line with the Christian tradition.
Besides the professional master course, a continuing education programme, granting 20 ECTS is also foreseen. The course has an interdisciplinary approach focusing on sacred art, with themes and activities which make the initiative unique among Italian universities.
The 1st level Professional Master course/specialisation course in Sacred Art aims at training experts in the sacred art sector. This art sector is deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of our country and represents a strong proportion of Italian artistic heritage.
The course is delivered in blended mode and foresees online and in person sessions, organised in 3 specialisations:
1) painting,
2) sculpture,
3) goldsmithing.
By the end of the course, each participant will be able to create and produce contemporary art works in line with the Christian tradition. Great attention is devoted to the acquisition of artistic and artisan techniques (painting, sculpture, goldsmithing) integrated with theoretical subjects that will provide students with the ability to interpret past and present sacred art, not only in aesthetic terms but also in relation to its symbolic meaning and usage.
Enrolment for both courses is open for all bachelor’s degree holders and is addressed in particular to graduates in architecture, historical disciplines, fine arts, and performing arts. The pathway is also suggested for teachers of history of arts, religion, philosophy, responsible people of sacred arts in dioceses, tour guides and all those wishing to deepen theoretical, technical and hand-craft aspects of sacred arts.
The minimum requirement is a bachelors’ degree or equivalent title. The minimum number of participants for the professional master course activation is 10. The minimum number of participants for the specialisation course is 20.
STUDENTS FROM NON-EU COUNTRIES will have to submit their application form (within the deadline set every year by the MIUR at www.miur.it) to the Italian Embassies (or Consulates) of the country they live in.
To complete the enrolment process it will be therefore necessary to submit the declaration of value of qualifications issued by recognised educational institutions, and a certified copy of the diplomas. These documents are issued by the Italian Embassies (or Consulates) of the students’ countries of origin.
Applications received after the deadline, lacking the above-mentioned documents and not sent by official consular communication will not be accepted.
Enrolment “upon condition” is not admitted.

The 1st level professional master course is provided in blended mode, which means that the theoretical part of the course will be carried out online (IUL training environment) and includes 9 modules for a total of 28 ECTS credits. The workshop part will take place in person in a chosen laboratory, among the three proposed, for a total of 20 ECTS credits. This is a practical exercise on one of the three specialization paths foreseen (painting, sculpture and goldsmithing). To access it, you must have completed the first part of the theoretical lessons with an in person final test for a total of 12 ECTS credits.
The specialisation course is online and includes only one theoretical part (carried out in the IUL online training environment) and includes 9 modules for a total of 28 credits, at the end of which a final test will be held for a total of 2 ECTS credits.
The laboratory in person lessons will take place at the School of Sacred Art in Viale della Catena, 4 Le Pavoniere – Parco delle Cascine – 50144 Florence (FI).
For online modules an e-learning environment, characterized by the IUL training model is envisaged. This is flexible and customizable based on the students’ previous knowledge and experience, and provides lectures and interactive teaching (forums, e-tivity, etc.) for each module.
The structure of online teaching for each ECTS credits is as follows:
1 hour of lecture : audio or video recordings, web-conference lessons (online meetings, also referred to as “synchronous”), pre-structured courseware or similar (that is, any material structured for educational purposes and offered in web environments of various types);
5 hours of interactive teaching: didactic interventions by the teacher or tutor addressed to the class or part of it for additional demonstrations or explanations (FAQs, mailing lists, forums), brief interventions carried out by the students in forums, blogs and wikis, e-tivity (individual or collaborative) carried out by the students with relative feedback;
19 hours of self-learning (individual and autonomous study).
This model provides assisted learning throughout the training, both by teachers and disciplinary tutors, content experts and a path tutor for transversal support.
At the end of the training course, the production of a work of art – agreed with one of the teachers of the master course – is foreseen, in one of the three specializations chosen and the relative presentation and description of the materials, techniques and content.
An indispensable prerequisite for accessing the final exam is to have carried out all the tests scheduled for each module.
